Acquiring Different Types of Knowledge
As a point of clarification before I begin the main points of this article, let me state that the concept term "knowledge" in the K.B.L.T. model is not necessarily accurate information and can be erroneous knowledge. Please do not confuse the concept "knowledge" with the concept "Truth."
When a Baby is born, most of the knowledge which it first acquires is acquired experientially. This is due in part, to its inability to communicate. Experiential knowledge produces a personal perception of the environment in which a person lives.
When a Lieutenant graduates at the top of his class from West Point, if he is assigned to command a platoon acquires a platoon sergeant as part of his command. Which of these two men possesses more "knowledge?" That is actually a trick question because if you say the platoon sergeant, you are inaccurate and if you say the lieutenant you are also inaccurate. The platoon sergeant possesses more Experiential knowledge but the lieutenant possesses more Academic knowledge.
There is a perceptual knowledge which may only be acquired experientially. A male obstetrician may learn a lot while acquiring his doctorate degree in medicine. Over decades of performing deliveries, he will continue to acquire knowledge. However, because he is male, he will never "know" child birth.
In Castilian spanish, the verb "to know" is "saber." The verb "to be acquainted with" is "conocer." It is forbidden to use "saber" in referring to one person's knowledge of another person. You may only use "conocer."
As a child gets older, he is exposed to Academic knowledge. This is knowledge which is taught through communication separate and apart from experience. At this point the child is taught many facts and other people's opinions.
Eventually the child will develop the mental capacity for analysis and will begin to acquire knowledge inferentially.
Another method of acquiring knowledge is "guided experiential knowledge." This is commonly known as training and is the kind of knowledge which is acquired as an apprentice or under the guidance of a coach.
The final type of knowledge acquisition or learning which I will mention in this article is "the knowledge of how to effectively apply knowledge" also known as wisdom.
Without the acquisition of knowledge, personal development comes to a grinding halt. Therefore, if you wish to continue developing, you must continue the pursuit of knowledge.
You need to read informative material in order to acquire "academic knowledge." You need to set objectives and strive for those objectives in order to acquire "experiential knowledge." You need to read developmental and wise writings in order to develop "guided experiential knowledge." You need to engage in the practice of Holding Yourself Accountable in order to acquire "wisdom."
As part of an effort to encourage your acquisition of knowledge, I will be using the newsvine.com service to recommend articles on the internet for your reading.
