Internal stress or self-condemnation
There have been many who have defined Integrity as being synonymous with Honesty. However this is a misunderstanding.
People who possess integrity are honest, but not all honest people possess integrity.
Integrity is actually a part of wellness or health. Just as your body needs physical wellness and your mind needs mental health, so also your sense of self needs to be well. When you fail to live up to your own personal ideals or expectations it can result in an internal dissonance. The more dissonance which exists within your own sense of self, the more you are unwell.
This illness of the sense of self results in emotional stress or self-condemnation. You can not live a healthy life while also being conflicted by self despisement.
People react to this dissonance in various ways. Some develop a type of disconnect in which others are able to easily observe self-contradiction and inconsistency while the individual with this disconnect is seemingly unaware of inconsistency in his or her life.
Others seem to be aware of the disconnect in their lives, but engage in an aggressive form of compartmentalization in which they attempt to "COPE" with this dissonance rather than remove it from their lives.
Still others develop a type of quiet desperation in which they are always attempting to keep one step ahead of the consequences of this lack of integrity.
Others become despondent and emotionally retreat into a realm of self-despisement.
It does not have to be this way. It is possible to learn how to live a life in which you are internally healthy. This is what we are going to be investigating in this blog.
